Freedom to Explore: Why Medical Card Holders are Switching to Rec at Marvin’s Garden and Simply Crafted

For years, the Minnesota medical cannabis program was the only way to find relief. It required doctor visits, annual registration fees, and a fairly clinical shopping experience. But as we move through 2026, the landscape has shifted. With the opening of Marvin’s Garden in Northeast Minneapolis and the evolution of Simply Crafted, many long-time medical patients are asking: “Do I still need this card?”

While medical programs serve a vital purpose, the "recreational" (adult-use) side of the market has blossomed into a more accessible, diverse, and community-focused experience. Here is why it might be time to skip the renewal and come over to the garden.

No More "Patient Fees" or Doctor Visits

Being a medical patient isn't just about the cannabis—it’s about the paperwork. Between the physician's certification and the time spent managing your registry, the "hidden costs" of being a patient add up.

  • At Marvin’s Garden: All you need is your ID proving you’re 21+. No appointments, no renewal fees, and no waiting for state approval. You walk in, you browse, and you leave with exactly what you need.

A Massive Leap in Product Variety

The medical market in Minnesota has historically been limited to a few specific manufacturers and a narrow range of delivery methods.

  • The Rec Advantage: Our shelves are a celebration of Minnesota’s artisanal craft. From our Legacy Cup-winning white chocolate bars to small-batch flower and unique terpene profiles you won't find in a medical dispensary, the adult-use market offers a world of choice. At Simply Crafted, we focus on the entourage effect—blending cannabinoids for a better experience, not just a clinical one.

The Atmosphere: From Pharmacy to Community

Medical dispensaries can feel a bit... sterile. They are designed like pharmacies because, legally, they have to be.

  • The Marvin's Garden Experience: We’ve designed our Central Ave location with a modern industrial and farmhouse aesthetic that feels like home. We aren't just a shop; we’re a destination. You can talk shop with our team, learn about the plants, and feel like part of the NE Minneapolis community rather than just a patient number.

High-Potency Freedom (Via Hudson/Luxe)

We know some medical patients rely on higher doses. While MN rec limits for edibles are capped at 5 mg per serving, we have a solution that the medical program doesn't: our Simply Crafted Luxe branch in Hudson.

  • If you find the state-mandated 5 mg servings too low for your needs, a quick trip across the river to our Luxe location gives you access to the high-potency options you’re used to, without the medical red tape.

Support Local, Support Craft

When you buy recreational, you are directly supporting local entrepreneurs and artists (like our frequent collaborator, Chuck U). You’re helping grow a local ecosystem of growers, makers, and dreamers right here in the 612.

The Verdict: Is it time to switch?

If you enjoy the freedom to choose your own strains, the ability to shop in a beautiful, relaxed environment, and the desire to support the local craft movement, the answer is yes.
